Negotiator Rodney Jackson Marches for Cancer Charity
On 13 March Rodney Jackson, Negotiator at our West Wickham branch will take to the streets with friends and family for the Marsden March. Team “Action Jackson” will be walking 14 miles to help raise as much money as possible for The Royal Marsden Cancer Charity as 20-month year old daughter Florence Jackson receives treatment for rare cancer.
Rodney and wife Carolyn Jackson received a diagnosis early December 2015 that Florence had a rare abdominal neuroblastoma cancer - known to affect fewer than 100 children in the UK each year.
“We noticed something was wrong when Flo stopped going to the toilet,” said Rodney. “After seeing the doctors and being told to return in two weeks, my wife and I, not convinced with the outcome, went to A&E two days later where it all became terrifyingly real. The diagnosis was heart wrenching, as it would be for any parent, but the support from The Royal Marsden in Sutton and our family, friends and colleagues has been amazing. We are very positive about the future for Flo.”
Florence started chemotherapy straight away and had a total of ten rounds of treatment every ten days. Although Florence is on the mend, the journey is not quite over. Florence will now receive a heavy dose of chemotherapy followed by radiotherapy. As Florence is at risk of the cancer returning, she has also been lucky to be selected for a trial of Immunotherapy, a cancer treatment developed in America to boost the body’s natural defences to fight the return of cancer.
“We would like to show our support and thanks to The Royal Marsden Cancer Charity. We hope to raise lots of money to help provide the best possible diagnosis, treatment and care for those affected by cancer. Every mile we walk will be worth it to help build a future beyond cancer”, says Rodney.
The Marsden March begins at The Royal Marsden in Chelsea finishing at the Sutton hospital with plenty of cheering points along the way.
