Benefits of buying a bungalow
The bungalow, the single storey house that first appeared on our streets in 1860, has become known for its practicality as an accessible living space, however, with fewer being built, finding a bungalow can often prove difficult. This hasn’t stopped demand, with this humble property increasing in popularity. So why is this? We look at the benefits of buying a bungalow and why they could make an excellent choice for your first or next step on the property ladder.
No ups and downs
Say goodbye to the climb for the bathroom or running up and down stairs to chase after the kids. Families with small children don’t need to worry about falls on the stairs (no need for stair gates), and anyone who enjoys open plan, modern living can create just that in a bungalow. As everything is laid out over one floor, bungalows are ideal for those with reduced mobility or wheelchair users, as the space can easily be customised to create more room.
Easy maintenance
You don’t have to worry about cleaning from top to bottom! Gone are the days of dragging the hoover up the stairs, and painting and decorating is much easier. Don’t forget that cleaning windows will also no longer be an issue without the need for a window cleaner to do the job for you. Even structural repairs are cheaper (no scaffolding needed!). With a bungalow, you can save money on maintenance and reduce cleaning time, allowing you to put your feet up and relax.
Room for renovation
When buying a bungalow, renovations are often more straightforward than a two-storey house, as they have no floors above them restricting changes to the layout. This is more achievable for an open plan, contemporary living space that has become desirable with homeowners. As with all renovations, don't go knocking down any walls until you get the green light from a structural engineer.
The only way is up
If you do want to make changes to a bungalow, extensions are a good option by building upwards (subject to planning). Not only does this increase your living space and layout, it will almost certainly help increase the value of your property, making the bungalow well worth the investment.
It is also worth noting that the number of bungalows being built is far fewer than other properties, with existing stock quite low. So, if you do find a bungalow that comes to the market, you might want to snap it up. Keep an open mind and visit the property to see for yourself the benefits it can bring.
Luckily, the Proctors team has some bungalows on their books. Take a peek here.
