MEET CHRISTOPHER WALL, PARTNER AT PROCTORS BECKENHAM

How long have you worked at Proctors?
Since 1991, so 26 years this September.

What’s your background? i.e. qualifications, past experience
I left school at 17 to work for a local independent agent, became a member of the NAEA and then steadily worked my way up the ranks.

When did you realise you wanted to work as an estate agent/in your role? Why?

It was quite early on at school; my dad taught me a lot about the structure of houses, how they’re built, decorated etc. I couldn’t see myself stuck to a desk all day, so estate agency seemed like a good mix of office work and getting out to look at different types of homes, as well as meeting people. Although the work may seem the same on the surface, actually, each property, every owner and situations are unique, so it’s always different.

What does a normal day at work involve?
The day starts with an early morning meeting to see what’s in the diary for the day and to get an update on the files we’re currently working on, which can be anything from updating vendors to progressing sales. Then there could be some viewings to chase and accompany, plenty of valuations of properties as well as marketing new properties and putting offers forward to vendors. The excitement is in the variety; you can go from valuing a 1-bed flat to a palatial 5-bed house – you never know what you will be valuing next.

What do you find rewarding in your job?
I like the fact we’re part of the whole story. From the first meeting with vendor at valuation stage, to then handing the keys over to the new owner and seeing how excited they are. Knowing you have helped people move on with their lives, to get their dream home gives you a real buzz and a feeling of satisfaction, which never dulls or goes away.

What, if any, are the challenges faced in your industry?
Outside influences affecting the market, i.e. currently Brexit. Technology, which is constantly evolving, prompting the need to keep abreast of changes within the profession, the different tools available to us and how to improve the process of selling homes.

What’s your most memorable/favourite sale?
There have been a lot over the years and I’ve met some lovely people, but my most recent memorable sale was where we really got stuck in, going above and beyond to help the buyer/seller. We cleared the garden, changed the lampshades, cleaned and sorted out the entire house. It was unusual and hard work, but the results were incredibly rewarding.

What is your favourite local restaurant?
We are very lucky in Beckenham, as we have a huge diverse range, but my faves are Pierre Luigi’s & Larascasse.

What’s your dream home?

I’d love a converted windmill, like the house out of Chitty Chitty bang Bang.

If you had to describe yourself in three words, what would they be?
Fastidious, endearing, humorous!

What are your interests outside of work?

Spending time with my daughters, cycling, walking with my dog, going to the cinema and visiting London.

What would people be surprised to know about you?
I can play the flute and ride a motorbike.

What’s your biggest achievement?
My daughters and owning my own business.

And finally,  we’re off to the pub - what’s your order?
G&T or a pint of local beer.
