Spotlight on Langley Park Golf Club
Situated between Beckenham and West Wickham, in the secluded parkland of Park Langley, sits one of the South East’s best golf courses – Langley Park Golf Club. Since teeing off more than a century ago, the club has produced a number of legendary figures in the world of golf and has become popular with keen golfers both locally and from further afield. Here at Proctors, we’ve decided to investigate one of our local sporting hotspots, putting Langley Park Golf Club under the spotlight.
A step back in time
The club was inaugurated Saturday 28th May 1910 as a privately-owned club aimed at the members of the Park Langley estate. The course was created by English golfing professional, John Henry Taylor, five-time winner of the Open Championships. Taylor designed the course with the game and grounds in mind; he once said, ‘The ground lends itself very well to the game. I have no hesitation in saying that the course will afford an excellent test of golf’.
In addition to the superb golf course, the club also featured a luxury clubhouse: The Langley Mansion. Sadly, the original was destroyed by a fire in 1913 and the club’s popular social hangout was relocated to overlook the club’s lake alongside the 18th green. Built in the style of an extended bungalow the clubhouse is the ideal place to go for a relaxed dining experience.
The course
Despite having undergone several redesigns over the years, the composition of the course has remained relatively unchanged for the past 40 years. Spanning 120 acres, this 18-hole parkland boasts a challenging yet fair game – perfect for pros and amateurs alike. It is also worth noting that the Langley Park Golf Club qualifies as a venue for the Open Championships; it really is a true test of golf!
Have a swing at it!
This exclusive club hosts a great variety of lessons, courses and competitions, making it the ideal learning environment for beginners. The club actively encourages the next generation of golfers to get involved, offering structured weekly lessons for children of all abilities, as well as private tuition with its in-house putting professionals. It also has a great Veterans’ Section comprising 140 members. These senior strikers regularly enter competitions in the local borough and wider county championships. If you’re a complete novice or a golfing pro, there’s something for everyone.
It’s not just about golf
The Langley Park Golf Club is as much of a community as it is a golfer’s paradise; so much so, it even offers non-playing social memberships where you can enjoy the benefits of the clubhouse, on-site restaurant and bar as well as regular social functions – discos, quiz nights, black-tie events and more – all at a discounted rate.
The club also hires out its function rooms for special events such as weddings, anniversaries and birthdays. So, whether you need somewhere to relax and socialise or are looking to celebrate a special occasion, the club is certainly worth a visit.
